Research Unit

Research Units are established for a limited period of time as flexible research groups based on specific missions in accordance with the needs of the University’s research strategy, and under the strong leadership of the Research Unit Leader, promote research that responds to the demands of future society as well as promising budding research, and thereby contribute to the achievement of the goals of the Institute. The purpose of this organization is to contribute to the achievement of the goals of the Institute.

All of the following requirements must be met in order to establish this organization, from which the University’s cutting-edge research fields are extracted.

  • Have a clearly defined mission.
  • To achieve the previous item, a leader who can strongly lead the research unit must be identified.
  • In principle, the research unit shall be managed through the acquisition of external funds.
  • The leader and core faculty must be affiliated or able to be affiliated with the Institute.
  • The research unit shall be established for a period not exceeding five years.

Flow of Establishment of Research Units

Research Units will be established based on applications either from the Director/Vice President in charge of the research (top-down) or from faculty members who wish to participate in the Research Unit (bottom-up).
Here is the process of installation by application from faculty members.

1- Apply jointly* with the head of the department to which you belong to the Director of the Institute for the Creation of Science and Technology.

Please submit your application after actively exchanging opinions with faculty members related to the research field of the research unit concerned.
Please submit the research unit application form to the Research Institute Administrative Group 2, Business Promotion Division, Institute for the Creation of Science and Technology (iir.adm2 [at]jim.titech.ac.jp).
In principle, please consult with us 6 months prior to the desired establishment.
*If the applicant faculty member belongs to the Institute for the Creation of Science and Technology, a joint name with the head of the department, etc. is not required.
*Please replace [at]with @ in the e-mail address.

2- The Director of the Institute for the Creation of Science and Technology consults with the Director and Vice President in charge of research.

If necessary, the Strategic Management Committee will be consulted on the outline of the research unit, the use of research seeds and human resources, and the level of demand from society.

3- The Board of Delegates of the Institute for the Creation of Science and Technology will deliberate on the issue.

4- The Director of the Institute for the Creation of Science and Technology applies for the establishment of the institute to the President.

5- The President will decide whether or not to establish the research unit after hearing from the persons concerned with the establishment of the research unit.

The Personnel Committee will hold a hearing to determine whether or not to establish the program and the support* from the university.
If the establishment is approved, a report will be made to the Board of Directors and the Council on Education and Research.
*Space assistance (up to a maximum) and preparation costs (only if needed) to set up the unit.
